QUEBEC CITY, May 22, 2019 – Employees of the National Battlefields Commission (NBC) will launch a strike on Thursday, May 23 at noon under the theme “Rich history, poor working conditions.”
The strike notice was delivered to the employer in the last few hours. NBC employees are part of the Union of National Employees affiliated to the Public Service Alliance of Canada – Quebec Region.
These workers are responsible for welcoming, animation and general maintenance at the Plains of Abraham and their museum. They will begin the strike with a picnic on the Plains, followed by a march on the Grande-Allée and neighbouring streets. Other activities are scheduled for the rest of the week.
NBC employees have been without a contract since October 31, 2017. They claim to have the worst working conditions in the entire federal government, including making up to 42% less in salary than employees of the National Capital Commission or Parks Canada for the same work. They want Canadian Heritage to allocate additional financial resources to the NBC so that they can finally achieve pay equity.
