Montreal, August 8, 2018 – The Quebec Region of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC-Quebec) is currently hosting a welcoming committee for the federal Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, in front of the Rialto Theatre in Montreal.
“We want to get the message accross to Minister Morneau that there are still thousands of federal public sector workers experiencing all kinds of pay problems. What is the government waiting for to take concrete action?” said Yvon Barrière, Regional Executive Vice-President of PSAC-Quebec, adding, “Even after two years of pay problems, our members are still going to work every day to provide services to Canadian citizens. They deserve better from their employer.”
The welcoming committee consists of about 20 members who have rolled out the red carpet for Minister Morneau and the Liberal stalwarts attending this fundraising event for the Liberal Party of Canada. The objective is to make friends of the LPC aware of the problems that public sector workers have been enduring for two years.
“Just last week, a member contacted us to complain about having to reimburse $50,0000 because she had received an overpayment of $25,000. This won’t do. Members who are struggling with pay problems shouldn’t have to lend money on credit to the government.” said Barrière.
PSAC has been fighting for over two years to ensure that members affected by this fiasco receive full compensation, and to expose a crisis that will cost Canadaian taxpayers more than 2 billion dollars. PSAC’s demands are:
- Stop recoveries of emergency salary advances until employees have received the pay they are owed;
- Recover the net pay, instead of the gross pay, for overpayments;
- Compensate public sector workers for the very real psychological and emotional stress caused by the pay problems and the unacceptable financial fallout;
- Lauch a national public inquiry to find out how the Phoenix pay system failed so completely, so that no other workers ever suffer the same fate.
