Artificial intelligence is already transforming our workplaces. Employers are ramping up its use to manage schedules, process files, evaluate performance and more. It’s no longer a matter of whether AI will be implemented. Now the question is: will we control it, or will it control us?
This PSAC-Quebec tour is aimed at documenting the real impacts of AI in your workplaces and finding solutions.

Learn more about AI
What is AI?
AI is a major technological upheaval and probably one of the biggest challenges of the next decade.
In some applications, AI uses algorithms able to process large quantities of data and produce a “general” answer to a problem (e.g. classification, recommendation, text generation).
AI can also be a tool for management and control in the workplace, for example when used to measure performance, analyze behaviour, accelerate production or support decision making.
Is AI already in your workplace?
(1) Task assistance
AI is often used to automate repetitive tasks (data entry, sorting, simple analysis).
Risk: it can lead to progressive deskilling and loss of control over the work.
(2) Occupational health and safety
AI can facilitate clerical tasks and simplify processes.
Risk: it can also make the job more difficult (faster pace, greater pressure, a preponderance of complicated files)
(3) Protection of personal information
Where is the data kept? In what country? Who has access to it? What is it used for?
Example: control of data and use conditions becomes critical when cloud computing tools are used.
(4) Job security, work quality, and surveillance in the workplace
Certain “standardized” jobs or tasks are at risk. Consequently, we need to
- protect jobs
- demand retraining/recycling
- preserve work and service quality.
Remember that some employers may use AI to monitor employees’ work.
