New: Environnement Committee and September 27 demostration in Montreal
New Environment and Just Transition Committee at PSAC‑Quebec
Within the last year, PSAC-Quebec created a five-member Environment and Just Transition Committee. This committee is the result of resolution 2021-G-81 and now forms an integral part of the Quebec Council’s internal regulations (Regulation 13). The committee’s mission is to raise awareness of environmental issues and advocate for a just transition with PSAC-Quebec members at the local, national, and international level.
Unions have the power to act on environmental issues, which are essential to a just transition. As summarized by the Réseau intersyndical pour le climat (RIC), a just transition involves adopting measures to ensure workers’ quality of life as we strive for a low-carbon economy. This idea was developed by the labour movement. The International Labour Organization (ILO) also noted that “a just transition for all towards an environmentally sustainable economy […] needs to […] contribute to the goals of decent work for all, social inclusion and the eradication of poverty.”[1]
Join the Montreal climate march on September 27
PSAC-Quebec invites its members to come out in force for the environment at the September 27 climate march in Montreal* and across Quebec. We’ll be putting pressure on governments to engage in social dialogue and instigate a true ecological and social transition. If you plan to attend, please fill out this Google Form so we have an idea of our numbers.
This event is organized by Pour la suite du monde, whose membership includes the FTQ. This is the movement behind the 500,000-person strong climate demonstration held in Montreal on the same date in 2019.
*For the Montreal event: PSAC members and their families and friends are invited to meet at 12:45 p.m. at the corner of Sainte-Catherine and Jeanne-Mance next to the Complexe Desjardins. The march runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
