Université de Montréal: Tentative agreement reached for research and teaching assistants

After more than a year of negotiations, the Syndicat des étudiant.es salarié.es de l’Université de Montréal (SÉSUM-PSAC) bargaining team is very proud to announce that a tentative agreement has been reached with the employer.

The team will now work on finalizing the text of the agreement. Details will be shared with members in the coming weeks.

“This is a great victory. The SÉSUM-PSAC bargaining team will unanimously recommend ratification of the agreement. Ratifying the agreement will dramatically improve our members’ working conditions,” stated PSAC-Quebec regional representative Jonathan Vallée-Payette.

The collective agreement expired in April 2021 and no longer reflected current working conditions. Since then, the pandemic has created unprecedented stress and insecurity in the education sector. The employer had to be reminded of its student employees’ quality and dedication.

“This agreement demonstrates members’ will. Despite major changes within the organization, members’ solidarity did not waver. Now, we hope these gains can bear fruit elsewhere,” said PSAC-Quebec Regional Executive Vice-President Yvon Barrière with pride.

The SÉSUM-PSAC bargaining team will call a general meeting of its members later this week to unveil the context and details of the tentative agreement. Members will be asked to vote to ratify the agreement. More information on this subject will be available shortly.
