Last night at 11:57 p.m., your PSAC-SÉTUE bargaining team reached a tentative agreement with UQAM after lengthy negotiations that lasted several hours.
“It was literally three minutes to midnight before the strike. The employer witnessed our mobilization and agreed to come back to the bargaining table with us to reach an agreement. This new agreement is a testament to your bargaining team’s incredible tenacity,” said Mélanie Desrosiers, PSAC-Quebec regional representative.
The bargaining team will now work on finalizing the text of the tentative agreement. Details will be communicated to members at the general meeting, which will be announced this week. “The PSAC-SÉTUE bargaining team will unanimously recommend that the agreement be accepted. Its ratification will considerably improve working conditions,” added Aboubacar Malam Chaibou G, who is responsible for the PSAC-SÉTUE collective agreement.
UQAM student employees have not received a salary increase since 2018 and their collective agreement expired on December 31, 2019. Since then, the pandemic created unprecedented stress and insecurity in the education sector. The employer had to be reminded of their student employees’ quality and dedication.
“This agreement shows the importance of mobilizing. By voting for a strike mandate, you put pressure on the employer. You showed them how essential your contribution is to the university”, Yvon Barrière, PSAC-Quebec Regional Executive Vice-President, said with pride.
The PSAC-SÉTUE bargaining team will call a general meeting later this week to unveil the tentative agreement’s context and details. Members will be asked to vote to ratify the agreement. More information will follow shortly.
